NVQ 1 Diploma in Hair & Beauty Therapy
What is the programme structure?
At times, all students will be expected to introduce new clients to the salon in order to help with practical assessments. The programme covers a wide range of skills which are split into units of study. In order to improve their knowledge of the industry, students will spend time each week in a practical salon where they will learn basic skills in beauty treatments including prepare and maintain salon treatment areas, assist with facial skin care, effective working relations, assist with nail services, assist with salon reception duties, blow dry hair, shampoo and condition hair.

This programme is designed for students wishing to gain introductory skills in the Hair & Beauty Therapy industry, or who wish to progress to Level 2.

2 GCSEs at grade E – G or equivalent, or an Entry Level qualification.
What does it include?
This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.
The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.
The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 2 will be the development of occupational skills in a selected vocational area and the development of personal, social and employability skills with a view to raising aspirations.
As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.
Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

Fully equipped hair & beauty salons.
Will there be any extra costs involved?
Students will be expected to purchase the specified uniform, this costs approximately £50. Also, you will need to purchase a kit, approximately £100. Additional educational visits may also be organised throughout the year.
How is the programme assessed?
Assessment is through formal written examinations, practical observation and written assignments. Several hours of homework, both written and practical, are required each week. All final work must be submitted in a portfolio of evidence.
What award will I achieve?

What can I do next?
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to progress on to NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy or hairdressing. Alternatively some students may wish to progress on to another Level 2 course within the College.
