What is the programme structure?

The course is made up of various hairdressing procedures in the salon environment, including:

• Ensure your actions reduce risks to health & safety.
• Shampooing and conditioning hair and scalp.
• Cutting hair using basic techniques.
• Changing hair colour using basic techniques.
• Provide scalp massage services.
• Advise and consult with clients.
• Promote additional products or services to clients.
• Style dress and finish hair using basic techniques.
• Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation.

Who is the programme for?

This course is aimed at students who wish to gain a formal qualification in Hairdressing. You must be able to demonstrate at interview, a genuine interest in hair & up to date designs. After studying for the VRQ2 students will be fully qualified and therefore be able to work in paid employment in a salon.

This programme is fast paced and ideally suited for the 19+ mature learner. You will required to have an interview due to the fast pace of the course.

How long does it take to complete?
1 year – 1 day/evening per week

What qualifications do I need?

4 GCSEs at grades D or above or equivalent.

What does it include?

The course will include learning a variety of hairdressing skills in the Colleges Hair Salons

At times, all students will be expected to introduce new clients to the salon in order to help with practical assessments.

Are there any special facilities for the programme?
There are commercial facilities which are fully equipped and up to date. This will provide a realistic working environment for you to train in. You will become a valued member of the team and play a vital role within a busy commercial salon environment.

Will there be any extra costs involved?

Appropriate dress, including footwear, will be required. Learners will have the opportunity to purchase or loan equipment and text books as per the specific requirements of the course area. Optional workshops / educational visits / practical activities are charged at cost. These will be advised by the Course Leader as and when they arise.

How is the programme assessed?
Assessment is through formal written examinations, practical observation and written assignments. Several hours of homework, both written and practical, are required each week. All final work must be submitted in a portfolio of evidence.

VRQ Level 2 in Hairdressing

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to progress on to NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing, employment as a junior stylist or self-employment.
