What is the programme structure?

The National Foundation Diploma covers a range of subject areas including Business enterprise, Business administration, Finance, Teamwork and Communication. You will develop practical skills and technical understanding through a unique blend of components of general and applied learning. The business units covered are: 1. The Business Environment 2. Business Resources 3. Introduction to Marketing 4. Business Communication 5. Business Accounting 6. Creative Product Promotion 7. Recruitment and Selection in Business 8. Developing Teams in Business 9. Aspects of contract and business law. You will master the skills and processes central to business and entrepreneurship by learning how to think, question, explore, create and communicate, enabling you to bring your ideas to life. It will enable you to become critical thinkers, effective communicators and creative practitioners. Much of the activity will be assignment or project based through which you will bring together different disciplines and develop your practical skills and experience. The course is ideal for students who wish to develop a broad understanding of the business sector, allowing the opportunity to specialise as you progress on to higher education and your business career.

Who is the programme for?

The National Foundation Diploma in Business is a vocational qualification designed to give students a fully rounded business education by combining theoretical study with practical application. This specialist business course will provide a strong grounding in a variety of business specialism’s and develop both individual and team working skills - highly valued by employers and universities.

How long does it take to complete?
This is a full-time 1-year course – equivalent to 1.5 GCE A levels at A - E

What qualifications do I need?

4 GCSEs at grade A*-C or equivalent, including a C or above in English Language.

What does it include?

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment. The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study. The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment. As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification. Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

The Business Department is fully equipped with excellent accommodation facilities and resource requirements designed specifically for your course needs.

Will there be any extra costs involved?

Students will be expected to possess their own portable storage devices (USB data sticks) and course text book. There may be some additional expenditure associated with educational visits. Further details will be available on application.

How is the programme assessed?
All units are assessed and graded by tutors. and overall grade for the qualification is awarded to all learners who successfully complete all units. Pass, Merit or Distinction grades are awarded. There are no external examinations.

What award will I achieve?
If you achieve all the components of the Diploma, you will be awarded a BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Business.

BTEC National Foundation Diplomas are valued by employers and lead to career opportunities in business specialisms such as finance, human resources, management or marketing, as well as other business-related careers. Learners may also progress within employment to professional qualifications such as those offered by the Chartered Institutes of Marketing, Management Accountants and Personnel Development. Alternatively, students may wish to progress on to the Extended Diploma in Business course or other relevant qualifications.
