What is the programme structure?
The course offers three pathways: Acting, Musical Theatre or Dance. The course is based around practical and academic activities including units that are largely performance or production based. Students will experience a wide range of performance techniques allowing them to develop creativity, express personal interests and ideas and experiment with all aspects of acting, musical theatre or dance. Despite the practical nature of the course, students will be expected to develop a broad understanding of the historical and cultural context of performance and produce a range of critical and evaluative research in order to guide their own practice.
Core units include: Performance workshop, the performing arts business, the historical context of performance, rehearsing and performing.
Acting pathway students will study: developing voice, principles of acting, movement, physical theatre, musical theatre, radio acting, singing skills, film and TV acting, directing, classical theatre performance and contemporary theatre performance.
Musical Theatre pathway students will study: a variety of dance techniques, principles of acting, applying acting skills, directing theatre plus drama improvisation. You will also study singing skills and techniques.
Dance students will study: classical ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, physical theatre, along with choreographic principles, dance improvisation and healthy performer.
Who is the programme for?
Students who have a strong interest and ability in acting, musical theatre or dance. Students who want to progress to higher education performing arts based courses or who are aiming to work professionally within the performing arts industry.
How long does it take to complete?
1 year - Equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels. Successful completion allows students to progress onto the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts in their 2nd year.
What qualifications do I need?
4 GCSEs at grade A* - C or equivalent including GCSE English. You will also be required to attend an audition.
What does it include?
This course is part of a study programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment. The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study. The key theme of study programmes at level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment. All learners will undertake a work placement as well as projects that help to develop employability skills. As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification. Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education.

Dance Studio, Acting Studio, Theatre and Performance space.
Will there be any extra costs involved?
Appropriate dress, including footwear, will be required. Plus students are invited on residential and various theatre trips which are optional. Costs for these will be advised as and when they arise by your Course Leader. Dance and singing qualifications carry additional charges and you may wish to purchase your own text books.
How is the programme assessed?
Assessment is generally carried out through projects based on real industry scenarios. A wide range of assessment methods are used by the team throughout the course. A final project will usually take the form of a major performance. As the course progresses you will be expected to rely more on your own initiative. You will work with experienced professionals who have a long history of success in the performing arts industry and are well placed to advise you on your future options or help you into higher education.
