What is the programme structure?
You will cover 6 units at level 1. The Diploma Level 1 year introduces you to the construction trade and gives you practical knowledge of basic carpentry and joinery skills including mortice and tenon joints and dovetail joints and using hand tools. You will study health and safety rules and industry regulations. On successful completion of Diploma Level 1 you may progress on to the Diploma Level 2 which consists of 8 units, you will practise many aspects of carpentry and joinery that will prepare you for work in the carpentry and joinery trade, including hanging doors, pitched roofs and using routers, planes and jigsaws. At diploma level 3 you will complete a further 8 units and experience the more complex processes within carpentry and joinery trade area.

How long does it take to complete?
1 year at Diploma Level 1, 1 year at Diploma Level 2 and 1 year at Diploma Level 3.
What qualifications do I need?
Diploma Level 1 - 2 GCSEs at Grade E - G or an Entry Level qualification.
Diploma Level 2 - Successful completion of Diploma Level 1.
Diploma Level 3 - Successful completion of Diploma Level 2.
What does it include?
This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.
The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.
The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 1 will be preparation for the world of work and the development of personal, social and employability skills.
The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 2 will be the development of occupational skills in a selected vocational area and the development of personal, social and employability skills with a view to raising aspirations.
As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English and/or maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.
Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.
Are there any special facilities for the programme?
The college has specialist workshops.
Will there be any extra costs involved?
At the start of the course students will be required to pay £75 towards the cost of materials, trips and equipment. Students will need to provide steel toecap footwear and overalls.
How is the programme assessed?
You will learn through a variety of activities but the emphasis will be on the practical application of skills and knowledge. Assessment is based on assignments with specific practical and job knowledge tests where necessary.
What award will I achieve?
On completion of Level 1, you will achieve a Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery. On completion of Level 2, you will achieve a Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry. On completion of Level 3, you will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry.
What can I do next?
On successful completion of this course you will be able to seek employment in the Carpentry and Joinery trade. Whilst working you will be able to go on to do the Apprenticeship in Site Carpentry Levels 2 - 3.
