What is the programme structure?

You will study 12 units comprising of 6 practical units, 6 theory units (which include 6 unit end tests and 1 synoptic test).
The Diploma level 1 introduces you safe working practices in the construction industry.
You will practice skills in preparing surfaces ready for decoration; applying paint by roller and brush; applying foundation and plain papers; and producing decorative finishes. Throughout the course you will be working towards the preparation and painting of flush doors and hanging wallpaper.

Who is the programme for?

The course is for anyone who has an interest in painting and decorating skills. It will appeal to students who enjoy carrying out practical work, who will follow tutor demonstrations then work independently to practice new skills.

2 GCSEs at grade E – G or an Entry Level qualification

What does it include?

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.

The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.

The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 1 will be preparation for the world of work and the development of personal, social and employability skills.

The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 2 will be the development of occupational skills in a selected vocational area and the development of personal, social and employability skills with a view to raising aspirations.

As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English and/or maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.

Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

Are there any special facilities for the programme?
The College has Painting & Decorating specialist workshops.

Will there be any extra costs involved?

At the start of the courses students will be required to pay £75 towards the cost of materials, trips and equipment. Students will need to provide steel toecap footwear and overalls.

How is the programme assessed?
You will learn through a variety of activities and the emphasis will be on the practical application of skills and knowledge. Assessment is throughout the course and based on small practical tasks and job knowledge tests. There is an online exam and a final practical task at the end of the course.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this course you will be able to seek employment as a trainee/apprentice in the painting and decorating trade, or continue your studies at Level 2 (subject to validation).
