What is the programme structure?
There are units introducing you to each of the construction trades. You will study through practical tasks in the workshop and there will be some written work to develop your knowledge and understanding.
You will learn how to work within the construction industry with high importance on your own safety and the safety of others. You will learn which tools to use for which job and practice practical tasks in carpentry and joinery; brickwork; painting and decorating; and plumbing. You will set out your work area, produce products, and tidy your work area when you have finished. You will develop your Maths and English skills through written and spoken communication with others, calculations of materials and job plans.
Who is the programme for?
The course is for students who have an interest in working in the construction industry in such areas as carpentry and joinery, brickwork, painting and decorating, or plumbing. It will appeal to students who enjoy carrying out practical work, who will follow tutor demonstrations then work independently to practice new skills.

2 GCSEs at grade E – G or an Entry Level qualification
What does it include?
This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.
The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.
The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 1 will be preparation for the world of work and the development of personal, social and employability skills.
As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English and/or maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.
Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

Will there be any extra costs involved?
At the start of the courses students will be required to pay £75 towards the cost of materials, trips and equipment. Students will need to provide steel toecap footwear and overalls.
How is the programme assessed?
You will learn through a variety of activities and the emphasis will be on the practical application of skills and knowledge. Assessment is throughout the course and based on practical tasks with some written work and short job knowledge tests.

What can I do next?
On successful completion of this course you will be able to progress to a level 1 Diploma in your chosen trade or seek employment as a trainee/apprentice.
