Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure
What is the programme structure?
This is a practical course based in the College’s sports centre with some theory aspects in the following areas: Health & Safety; preparing and supervising sports sessions; communicating with participants; customer care; maintenance of equipment & facilities and working within a team. The programme covers the following units: Help to provide equipment for active leisure, learning and well-being activities. Help to give good levels of service to participants and customers in active leisure, learning and well-being. Deal with accidents and emergencies. Help to maintain active leisure, learning and well-being facility areas. Help to maintain active leisure, learning and well-being activity equipment.

This programme is for those students who wish to pursue a career in the sport and leisure industry.

2 GCSEs at grade E - G or an Entry Level qualification.
What does it include?
This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment. The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study. The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 1 will be preparation for the world of work and the development of personal, social and employability skills. As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English and/or maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification. Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.
Are there any special facilities for the programme?
You will use the College’s Sport Centres facilities, sports hall, fitness suite with specialist gym equipment, a sports laboratory and outside sports facilities.
Will there be any extra costs involved?
Additional costs will be between £50 - £75 for Sports Kit and stationary items. Financial support may be available.
How is the programme assessed?
The programme is assessed by a mixture of continuous assessment of practical activities. Final assessment will be based on a portfolio of work which will be produced over the year.
What award will I achieve?
Level 1 NVQ Award in Sport and Active Leisure (QCF).
What can I do next?
You will be able to progress on to either the NVQ Level 2 in Instructing Exercise & Fitness or NVQ Level 2 Activity Leadership. Alternatively, you could progress into employment within the leisure industry.
