What is the programme structure?

This course will allow you the opportunity to realise your creativity in the exciting world of Games Design and Animation. You will be able to explore your creative potential in a hands on environment using the powerful Apple Suite and using a range of dynamic software applications. From Pen and Paper to Mouse and Screen you will be designing and creating 3D models and environments, animating your own characters and navigating through your own interactive worlds. You will be able to create cutting edge digital illustrations to make exciting concept art and engaging graphic narratives. The course will allow you to tackle motion graphics and video effects. Also boost your web skills developing interactive applications and online games. You will also participate in structured drawing development, research and analytical aspects of the course as well as receiving regular tutorials to support your work.

Who is the programme for?

This programme is suitable for students who have an interest in Games Design, Games Character and Environment design, 3D and 2D Animation, Web Design, Motion graphics and Web Design The course allows students to pursue career in Games, Web and Interactive Design.

How long does it take to complete?
1 year - Equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels. Successful completion allows students to progress onto the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Games Design and Animation) in their 2nd year.

What qualifications do I need?

4 GCSEs at grade A* - C or equivalent including GCSE English. You will also need to present a satisfactory portfolio or related artwork such as character design or storyboards.

What does it include?

This course is part of a study programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.

The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.

The key theme of study programmes at level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment. All learners will undertake a work placement as well as projects that help to develop employability skills.

As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.

Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education.

Are there any special facilities for the programme?
Using a wide range of the very best modern software such as Photoshop/After FX/Illustrator/Flash/Final Cut/3D Studio Max, you will able to create exciting and stimulating Creative Games and Animation Products. The faculty is well equipped with state of the art Apple Macs and other design technologies. This will assist you in your aim of pursuing skills for a career in the rapidly expanding Creative Media industry. The teaching staff are experienced practitioners from across all aspects of the Design Industries. Industrial links are considered to be a vital part of the programme and work experience is encouraged. There are also a number of educational visits and trips throughout the year as well as guest lecturers from industry.

Will there be any extra costs involved?

Basic art materials will be provided. However, a starter pack may be available within your course area which you may wish to purchase as this will give you your own set of supplies. Any educational visits will be charged at cost, these will be advised by your Course Leader as and when they arise.

How is the programme assessed?
Coursework is assessed continuously and a final major project assessed by exhibition. An experimental approach to a wide range of design problems is encouraged. Work is project based starting with research and design development leading towards final design solutions. As the work progresses it becomes more applied and you will be expected to rely more on your own initiative. You will work with skilled and experienced tutors who have a long history of success in placing students both in higher education and industry.

Successful students can progress onto the HND in Games Design at Mid Cheshire College or onto a Degree course in an appropriate subject at another UK university/college.
