What is the programme structure?

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science consists of 18 different units to study, delivered largely through practical work, investigations, visits and trips; six core units and 12 specialist units. In the first year, you will study the core units, plus Mathematics and Statistics. A similar pattern of three core units and six specialist units is followed in the second year. If you are successful you will have gained a Level 3 qualification that is equivalent to three different A-Level science subjects.

Each unit is assessed through various types coursework. Two of the units are externally assessed by the exam board.

Who is the programme for?

For people who have a keen interest in the three main disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. If you want to gain a variety of laboratory practical skills which are directly transferable into the workplace, then the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is for you. It is a qualification designed to offer the student a choice of routes into Higher Education, Training and Employment. The course is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

2 years - equivalent to 3 A Levels

What qualifications do I need?

For the Extended Diploma (2 years) you will need a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C, or a Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science (Merit), or a Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science (Merit). To help your employability skills, the college structures the timetable to allow students who have not achieved grade C in Maths or English GCSE to study it alongside the BTEC L3. We can discuss what suits your needs at your interview.

What does it include?

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.

The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.

The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment.

As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.

Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

Are there any special facilities for the programme?
The College has specially equipped science laboratories and a dedicated team of highly qualified tutors and technicians.

Will there be any extra costs involved?

Recommended Course Book BTEC Level 3 National Applied Science £20 (ISBN 978-1-846906-80-0) There will be additional costs for laboratory coat (purchase independently), consumables/visits £60 per year. You may qualify for remission of these costs.

How is the programme assessed?
19 units, assessed by a large number of assignments continually across the 2 years.
