What is the programme structure?
A BTEC Extended Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Theoretical units comprise of at least 50% of the entire course including research, analysis and reflection of different moving image texts.
The course is made up of a range of units covering different aspects of media production, including research technique, video editing, single camera drama, understanding media industry, critical approaches to media products and music video production.
You will learn about media industries, production methods and the audiences they relate to. You will work in teams as well as individually, and will develop a portfolio of practical and written work. The Extended Diploma will enable increasing specialisation in an area of particular interest such as television drama, film, music video and editing.

This programme is for students who wish to pursue a career in Media, Marketing or Education.
How long does it take to complete?
1 year - Equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels.
What qualifications do I need?
L3 BTEC 90 Credit Diploma in Creative Media (TV & Film) and 4 GCSEs at grade A* - C or equivalent (including GCSE English). You will also need to present a satisfactory portfolio.
What does it include?
This course is part of a study programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.
The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.
The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment.
As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.
Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.
Are there any special facilities for the programme?
The college is well equipped with its own multi media production centre housing a suite of industry standard Macintosh and PC’s. You will work with digital editing software to produce your own videos with special effects and sound tracks. The teaching staff are experienced practitioners from across all aspects of the media Industry. Industrial links are considered a vital part of the programme and work experience is encouraged.
Will there be any extra costs involved?
Basic art materials will be provided however a starter pack may be available within your course area which you may wish to purchase as this will give you your own set of supplies. Any educational visits will be charged at cost, these will be advised by your Course Leader as and when they arise.
How is the programme assessed?
Work is practical and theory based. Assessment is through a combination of portfolio and externally assessed units

What can I do next?
BTEC Extended Diplomas are valued by employers and lead to a wide range of career opportunities within the media industry, including: TV/Film Editor, Director, Producer or Researcher, Script Writer, Animator Documentary Filmaker, marketing or the education sector and Video Compositor (special effects). Alternatively, students may wish to progress on to relevant higher level qualifications.
