What is the programme structure?

On this course there is a strong emphasis on developing photographic skill using a range of camera types and lighting techniques, along with new digital technologies appropriate to photography. During the first year this course will cover a range of photographic subject areas including Studio Still Life, Portraiture, Advertising, Editorial, Newspaper and Technical Photography. In the second year of study there is an opportunity to specialise in a specific field of photography. You will also study design history, photographic theory, computer graphics and business studies.

This programme is for students who wish to pursue a career in photography.

How long does it take to complete?
1 year - Equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels.

What qualifications do I need?

Level 3 BTEC 90 Credit Diploma in Photography & 4 GCSEs at grade A* - C or equivalent (including GCSE English). You will also need to present a satisfactory portfolio.

What does it include?

This course is part of a study programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.

The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.

The key theme of study programmes at level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment. All learners will undertake a work placement as well as projects that help to develop employability skills.

As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.

Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education.

Are there any special facilities for the programme?
The programme is run in purpose built facilities with two dedicated fully equipped photographic studios, professional darkrooms, digital cameras and image editing computers all running the latest professional software.

Will there be any extra costs involved?

Although the college has a wide range of cameras it is advisable for students to have their own camera and you may be required to buy some photographic materials. Optional educational visits are charged at cost as and when they arise, your Course Leader will inform you of these.

How is the programme assessed?
An experimental approach to a wide range of design problems is encouraged. Work is project based starting with research and design development leading towards final photographic solutions. As the work progresses it becomes more applied and you will be expected to rely on your own initiative. You will work with skilled and experienced photographers who have a long history of success in industry and placing students into higher education. Course work is assessed continuously and a final major project assessed by exhibition.

You can progress on to our Foundation Degree in Contemporary Photography, or a range of Degree courses offered throughout the UK. Employment opportunities exist in advertising, fashion, photographic laboratory work, photographic assistant and medical, fashion, advertising, press, sport and wedding phototgraphy.
