What is the programme structure?

The course is made up of core units - Government, Policies and the Public Services, Leadership and Teamwork, Understanding Discipline in the Uniformed Public Services, Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle. And specialist units - Fitness Testing and Training, Responding to Emergency Service Incidents, Career Planning for the Public Services, Volunteering in Public Services, Land Navigation by map and compass. The public service department is exciting, active and vibrant and will provide you with all the support and guidance you need to get you qualified and succeed in your chosen career path.
The course will help you to develop an understanding of aspects of the uniformed service of your choice, find employment in the uniformed service of your choice, gain access to higher education and develop skills necessary to study at degree level.

For those students who are interested in a career in Uniformed Services e.g Police, Paramedic, Fire and Rescue Service, Army, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Prison Service, Coastguard, HM Revenue & customs

4 GCSEs at grade A* - C or equivalent.

What does it include?

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.

The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.

The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment.

As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.

Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

Are there any special facilities for the programme?
The facilities include a gym and a climbing wall.

Will there be any extra costs involved?

£75 per year for practical activities and trips plus approximately £100 for uniform.

How is the programme assessed?
This is through projects, assignments, individual and group work and written and oral presentations. You will be assessed on a portfolio of work. You will also undergo a physical fitness assessment for entry into a uniformed service. Visits will be made to public service organisations and guest speakers will be invited to talk about their public service experiences.

What award will I achieve?
Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services

What can I do next?

This BTEC Extended Diploma is valued by employers and higher education institutions alike. Students will be able to progress into careers in the Police, Armed Services, Fire Service, public service and security industry. At higher education level, you will be able to specialise in subjects such as Criminology, Risk and Emergency Management and Public Services.
