What is the programme structure?
It is a practical course with some theory in the following areas: Coaching, developing and maintaining fitness, planning and instructing gym-based exercises and dealing with emergencies.
The programme covers the following areas:
• Evaluate coaching sessions and develop personal coaching practice
• Support participants in developing and maintaining fitness
• Deal with accidents and emergencies
• Plan and prepare a gym-based exercise session
• Instruct a gym-based exercise session
Who is the programme for?
This programme is for those students who wish to pursue a career in sport and recreation for eg. Working in a Fitness club or Leisure Centre.

4 GCSEs at grade D or above or equivalent.
What does it include?
This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.
The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.
The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 2 will be the development of occupational skills in a selected vocational area and the development of personal, social and employability skills with a view to raising aspirations.
As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.
Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.
Are there any special facilities for the programme?
You will use specialist gym and hall as well as outside sports facilities. New fitness Centre, sports lab and Moss Farm will be used.
Will there be any extra costs involved?
Additional costs will be between £75-100 for Sports Kit, text book and stationery items. There will also be a residential trip that will cost approximately £100. Financial support may be available for this.
How is the programme assessed?
Continuous assessment of practical activities in the College fitness centre and work experience. The final assessment is based on a portfolio of work, which you will produce during the year.
What award will I achieve?
Edexcel NVQ Level 2 in Instructing Exercise and Fitness.
What can I do next?
You will be able to progress on to the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science, or into employment as a leisure centre technician or attendant or pool attendant.
